One of the first spas in North America, Sonoma Mission has quite a history. While various incarnations of hospitality services date back to the mid-i 9th century, the first thing resembling a spa appeared here in 1927 — even though the word “spa” was, at that time, virtually absent from the American lexicon. But with the world’s largest indoor mineral pool, as well as a staff of masseurs and masseuses, the mission-styled inn was decades ahead of its time in offering the facilities and services that would later be known by this label.
The ‘80s and ‘90s have seen a number of augmentations, mostly in the form of additional rooms, suites and service facilities. In 1991, efforts were made to refresh the geothermal resources that have made this propertyfamous. A new source of water was discovered 1 ,1 00 feet beneath the inn, waters rich in minerals heated naturallyto a temperature of 1 35 ‘ F. In 1 999, the evolution of Sonoma Mission Inn continued with more suites as well as a new, 40,000 square foot spa facility that makes these waters a centerpiece.
But other assets share in the draw to Sonoma. In the Grille, you’ll find more than 200 premium Sonoma and Napa wines and an award-winning menu of strong local influence. And in the treatment rooms, you’ll find that creative therapists have found other, non-culinary uses for the same fruits of the earth. Rich history and agrarian charm make this wine country classic a favorite.
