If creative and imaginative pampering and fitness in a 32-acre, Hawaiian oceanfront setting sounds appealing, then The Orchid could be the place for you. Besides the resort’s award-winning golf course and tennis facility, The Orchid’s Spa Without Walls goes out of its way to come up with creative treatments and classes that make full use of the sounds of the ocean and the resort’s lush setting on the Kohala Coast.
"Comfort in the Ocean" is an introductory snorkel class in beautiful Pauoa Bay that promises to acquaint you with Hawaii’s marine life while teaching safe snorkeling techniques. Quieter activities include seaside meditation and yoga, Pilates, and a "Waterhythmics" class, a gentle, full-body workout held in the resort’s heated, 10,000-square-foot pool. Value your eyesight? Then try a yoga class for the eyes, called "Vision Fitness".
Another treat for the senses is the spa’s signature treatment, the Big Island Vanilla Coffee Exfoliation, an invigorating scrub featuring pulverized Big Island-grown coffee beans, orange peel and kukui nut, followed by a heavenly application of vanilla lotion. You can further indulge your senses and opt for a massage in one of several private oceanfront cabanas, or choose an outdoor waterfall teahouse and be lulled by the sounds of moving water.
The resort seems truly interested in sharing Hawaii’s history with its guests; complimentary classes include "Polynesian Navigation", where guests learn about the ancient Polynesians who sailed to Hawaii; "Hawaiian Arts and Crafts", "Historical Hikes" and a botanical tour, where a guide introduces guests to the types and many uses of flora and fauna around the resort.
For a more vigorous workout, an Orchid "beach boy" (or beach girl) will give personal instruction on how to use a one-man outrigger canoe, giving you the chance to paddle near sea turtles, dolphins and whales (in the winter) while getting an excellent upper-body and cardio workout. Surf and paipo (body board) lessons are also available.
Babysitting and a full and half-day children’s program are available for keiki (children) ages five to 12.
