Aptly named, Heartland Spa occupies 32 peaceful acres of lakeland, forest, and farmland two hours south of Chicago. Surrounding it is an agrarian tranquillitythat stretches for miles. The immediate atmosphere at Heartland is relaxed and unpretentious, nurturing and instructive. Within this soothing milieu, practical strategies are offered to help you feel better, look better, and live better.
The formula at work here is not unique, but the care taken in implementing this formula is. Proper nutrition and active days become foundation, while pampering services and other modes of healing add to the architecture of a better, healthier you.
Included in the five-night package is time on the ropes course, a kind of glorified jungle-gym with safety measures that allows you to test your physical and mental limits. Just as you set goals on this challenging course, so too will you set goals toward wellness. Olympic gold medal swimmer and motivational speaker Sheila Taormina tells audiences that success occurs when you make a plan and stick with it. She’s never been to Heartland, but we’d guess that she would approve of using a tool like the ropes course to model personal growth and confidence building.
Fitness activities are available on an extensive basis, and are always evolving as instructors stay on top of the latest in their industry. Also extensive are the options in pampering services. Five-night programs include four massages and one facial; many other services are available on an a Ia carte basis.
The menu is mostly vegetarian, low in fat and sodium, but high in satisfaction. Breakfast might include Heartland’s own wheat bread, sliced thickly and French toasted in the oven, fresh fruit and fresh squeezedjuice. Snacks are served mid-morning and afternoon; look for home baked cookies and smoothies of berries and cider. For lunch you might find the inventive pairing of portabella mushrooms and Vidalia onions. For dinner, perhaps it’s a low-fat vegetarian lasagna, or homemade spinach and mushroom raviolis along with grilled salmon. And to finish it all off: a non-fat chocolate soufflé.
