Well before the word spa appeared in the popular lexicon, Ten Thousand Waves was offering an aquatic serenity that amounted to something of a harbinger. Nestled in the piñons above Santa Fe, this unique place is perhaps best described as a Japanese adobe-style health spa. Central to the experience are a number of elaborate baths; surrounding the therapeutic value of the baths are a variety of spa services, gardens, and thematic accommodations for those wise few who choose to extend what most can only experience as just a one-day visit
Kimonos, towels, and sandals are provided for day and overnight guests alike. About a dozen tubs are on the menu, many hot, some cold, all free of chlorine but kept clean through a system of ultraviolet light, ozone, and hydrogen peroxide. Overnight guests enjoy complimentary access to a communal teak tub, saunas, and cold plunge; others pay $13 for unlimited access to these communal areas.
Other waters are available. The women’s communal is made available under terms similar to the above communal, while more exclusive soaks command higher prices.
Consider the New Kojiro. Twenty-six dollars per person per hour buys access to this tub, lined with pebbles and surrounded by redwood decking. Or picture the Waterfall tub. Enveloped by natural rock, the waters here run just shy of 100 degrees. To cool you off, a waterfall spills into a private cold plunge. The facility alone is available at $26 per person per hour; toss in a massage therapist for a 40-minute aquatic massage, and you have both the bath as well as the treatment for just $65. The One Wave and Kobuta tubs, available at $19 per person per hour, are of redwood construction and piñon surroundings.
More than 1 00 massage therapists are on staff at Ten Thousand Waves, all certified, some with 30 years of professional experience. Swedish is the typical administration, the depth of treatment varying per needs of the guest. Among other therapies is the practice of Ayurvedic, which adds lavender, sandalwood, and calamus root to the experience.
