Late 1 9th-century artist and writer Elliot Daingerfield had a penchant for a place in the Blue Ridge Mountains, a place where he described the light as “never glaring, always glowing throughout the shadows, clouds, or mist.” His visits to the bucolic Blue Ridge town of Blowing Rock consumed his summers and influenced his work deeply. In 1916 the tourist turned denizen when, outside of Blowing Rock, his summer home at the foot of Grandfather Mountain was nearly complete. As the towering Grecian columns arrived from the Mediterranean, and the westward front porch was completed, the view of the setting sun was inspirational. He named the manor Westg low.
Today, Westglow Manor is Westglow Spa, a place where the same sunsets combine with such other soothing elements as regular exercise, proper nutrition, stress management, and last but certainly not least, pampering, relaxing spa treatments. This holistic approach to wellness is the tried-and-true formula of proprietor Glynda Valentine; 20 years ago, when the paradigm was simple weight loss, Valentine suggested a more comprehensive philosophy that addressed fitness, longevity, and health.
